1. Introduction of Cato the Younger Statue
Cato the Younger (95–46 BC), full name Marcus Porcius Cato, was a highly representative political figure and Stoic philosopher of the late Roman Republic. He was renowned for his strict moral standards, incorruptibility, and unwavering commitment to the republican system. Throughout his life, he opposed the concentration of power, particularly opposing the political line of Julius Caesar. In 46 BC, after the defeat of the republicans, he chose to commit suicide in Utica. This Cato the Younger Statue, carved from white marble, depicts the crucial moment before Cato the Younger’s death in Utica.
The figure is a full-length standing statue, with a stable and restrained posture. The body proportions are close to natural scale, and the muscle and skeletal structure are meticulously rendered. In his left hand, he holds a scroll of Plato’s *Phaedo*, while in his right hand he grasps a short sword used for suicide. These two objects are included simultaneously in the composition, creating a clear and defined historical context. The facial expression is restrained, the gaze is lowered, and the folds of the shawl and robe are heavy and rhythmic.
