1. Introduction of Angel of Grief Garden Statue
William Wetmore Story (1819–1895) was a prominent 19th-century American sculptor, poet, and legal scholar. He received early legal training and later lived for many years in Rome, Italy, where he created Neoclassical sculptures. His works often drew inspiration from historical, literary, religious, and commemorative themes, emphasizing the emotional expression in the figures’ postures. One of his most famous works is Angel of Grief, created in 1894 as a memorial sculpture for his deceased wife, Emelyn Story. In this Angel of Grief Garden Statue, an angel prostrates herself on a monument, her head buried between her arms, one hand hanging naturally at her side, her large wings drooping to the sides, conveying a heavy, quiet, and profound sorrow.
