Japanese Ningyo
African Mami Wata
Caribbean Lasirèn
- European Culture: Mermaids are typically depicted as sea creatures with the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a fish, frequently appearing in maritime legends and symbolizing love, mystery, and the unknown power of the sea.
- Ancient West Asian Culture: The ancient Syrian goddess Atargatis, associated with early half-human, half-fish myths, is considered a significant cultural source of mermaid legends.
- Japanese Culture: Japanese mermaids (Ningyo) typically differ from their European counterparts. Some legends describe them as fish-like creatures with human faces, associated with longevity, mystical powers, and omens of disaster.
- African Culture: The Mami Wata of West Africa is a water spirit associated with water, wealth, and spiritual power, sometimes depicted as a woman with a fish tail.
- Caribbean Culture: Influenced by African traditions and local culture, the Caribbean also has its own stories of mermaids and water spirits, often associated with the ocean, rivers, and supernatural forces.
While the aquatic myths in these cultures vary, they all reflect humanity’s imagination of the ocean and the unknown world.
What Is the Original Story of the Mermaid?
Mermaid legends can be traced back to ancient civilizations thousands of years ago, and there is no single, unified origin story. Among them, the ancient Syrian goddess Atargatis is often considered to be associated with early mermaid legends. According to one popular myth, she was heartbroken after accidentally killing the mortal she loved, and threw herself into a lake, hoping to become a fish, ultimately taking on a half-human, half-fish form.
One of the most famous modern mermaid stories is “The Little Mermaid,” published in 1837 by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. The story tells of a young mermaid who falls in love with a human prince. To gain legs, she trades her voice with a sea witch, but ultimately fails to win the prince’s love. She chooses not to harm the prince and eventually turns into sea foam, becoming the Lady of the Air.
Our Fiberglass Mermaid on a Rock Statue Project
This Mermaid Statue is a custom-made fiberglass mermaid sculpture by our factory for an American client, intended for landscaping the gardens of a beachfront resort hotel. The client desired an elegant seated pose, showcasing the mermaid’s natural and gentle demeanor, paired with a rock-like base. We completed the clay sculpting, fiberglass molding, and surface finishing according to the design requirements, ultimately creating this white mermaid on a rock statue.

This fiberglass mermaid sculpture depicts a young woman sitting quietly on a rock, sculpted in a realistic style. The mermaid’s upper body leans slightly forward, her head naturally lowered, her eyes and brows soft, a faint smile playing on her lips, presenting a serene and gentle expression. She has thick, wavy long hair that falls naturally along her shoulders and back, with clearly defined layers. Her arms extend to her sides, one hand resting on the rock surface, the other gently resting on her upward-curving tail fin, the movement graceful and natural.

The mermaid’s lower body is a thick and long fish tail, gradually curving forward from her waist, coiling around the rock. The fish tail is carved with neatly overlapping scales, the size of which varies with the curves of the body. The tail fin at the end curls upwards, spreading out in a fan shape. The base is shaped like an irregular rock, carved with layers of stacked stone structures and a rough rock texture. The entire mermaid on a rock statue is finished in white, unifying the figure, fish tail, and rock base, while preserving rich three-dimensional details.

How Our Factory Made This Mermaid Statue from Clay to Fiberglass

Our artisans first create a clay model of the mermaid, meticulously sculpting the facial features, hair, fish scales, and rock textures. After the clay model is complete, a mold is made, resin is applied inside the mold, and fiberglass cloth is layered on top, with an internal steel frame added for reinforcement according to the sculpture’s structure. After demolding, the mermaid on a rock statue undergoes assembly, polishing, detail finishing, and a white paint finish, ultimately completing the fiberglass mermaid sculpture.
In addition, we can also create sculpture prototypes using 3D modeling and 3D printing technology based on images, drawings, or design requirements provided by clients, to meet the needs of different shapes, sizes, and customized projects.
