Igor Mitoraj (1944–2014), a Polish-French sculptor, is one of the most recognizable artists in the contemporary sculpture world. He combines classical art with modern aesthetics, using broken, bandaged, and incomplete faces and bodies as core images to explore the relationship between human fragility, memory, dreams, and divinity. Mitoraj often uses bronze and marble as media to create portrait sculptures with “fracture aesthetics”, as if they have been revived from ancient ruins, while also implying the loneliness and contemplation of modern people. Titled Sonno, this Sleeping Face Sculpture was created by Mitoraj in 2001 using bronze casting, and stands as one of his most iconic works.
The Sleeping Face Sculpture shows two closed-eye faces close together, with a peaceful expression, and the composition is gentle and deep, symbolizing intimacy, dreams, and spiritual rest. The lines of the figure’s facial features are soft, and the surface shows a subtle transition between patina and bronze, adding a sense of history and texture. The two faces sleeping facing each other look like twin selves or lovers cuddling together, reminiscent of the desire for peace and symbiosis. Arturban Statue can customize various replica statues.
