1. Introduction of Sculpture Horse and Rider
Eugeny Alexandrovich Lanceray (1848–1886) was an important 19th-century Russian bronze sculptor. He was particularly skilled at depicting horses, cavalry, hunters, national figures, and frontier travel scenes. This Sculpture Horse and Rider, Afghan, created in 1879, depicts an Afghan man on horseback.
The figure in the horse and rider sculpture wears a turban and a wide robe, with a scimitar and other equipment at his waist. His right hand holds aloft a decorated pole, and his body is slightly turned to the side, suggesting a pause for observation. The horse is firmly planted on all fours, its head slightly forward. The mane, reins, saddle, saddlebags, and tail hair are all depicted with considerable detail. The undulating texture of the base further emphasizes the presence of the figure and his mount on a journey.
