1. Introduction of North African Man Statue
Loiseau-Rousseau (1861–1927) was a French sculptor who initially studied etching and sculpture before turning to small figures and Orientalist themes. He gained attention at the Paris Salons in the late 19th century and, through his trip to Africa in 1892, developed an interest in North African figures, clothing, and exotic imagery. His works often express regional identity through the face, turban, robe, and posture of the figures, exhibiting distinct characteristics of 19th-century French Orientalist art. A burnous is a hooded long cloak commonly found in the Maghreb region of North Africa. The sculpture depicts a man whose face is hidden beneath a wide hood, with a clearly defined beard and a composed, serious expression. The cloak is gathered at the chest with a knot, giving the overall silhouette a heavy, substantial feel. The sculpture is made of burnous bronze with a dark patina, exhibiting a metallic quality at the edges of the hood and the folds of the garment.
