The Laughing Buddha, also known as the Bag Buddha, is a popular auspicious Buddhist image in Chinese folklore, originating from Maitreya Buddha in Buddhism. The image of the Bag Buddha is typically that of a monk wearing a worn-out robe, with a beaming smile and a full belly, carrying a cloth bag. According to traditional stories, the Bag Buddha was a Tang Dynasty Zen Buddhist monk beloved by the people for his open-minded and cheerful personality.
