1. Introduction of Egyptian Couple Statue
This sculpture, titled “The King’s Acquaintances Memi and Sabu,” was created during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt (circa 2575–2465 BCE) and unearthed in the Western Necropolis of Giza. Memi and Sabu were not pharaohs, but rather members of the elite with close ties to the royal family. Their title, “King’s Acquaintance,” underscored their special status in contemporary society. The Egyptian Couple Statue, constructed of limestone and bearing traces of residual painting, reflects the ancient Egyptian tradition of integrating sculpture and painting.
The sculpture depicts Memi and Sabu standing side by side. Memi, topless and wearing a short skirt, possesses a muscular, upright figure and a square face, embodying the ancient Egyptian ideal of male sex. Sabu, wearing a long, close-fitting skirt, stands beside her husband, her arm naturally entwined around Memi’s shoulders, her posture graceful yet powerful. Both men’s expressions are solemn, their gazes fixed forward, a characteristically stylized expression. The stone slab behind the Egyptian Couple Statue serves as support and also serves as the inscription.
