In Roman mythology, “Bellona” is the goddess of war, often depicted as holding weapons of war such as swords or spears. In McConnell’s
sculpture, the image of Bellona further highlights the cruel side of war. She shoulders her upper body with a shield and wears a helmet
with a death portrait, symbolizing the pain of war and the inevitability of life.
