J. Seward Johnson, Jr. is a renowned American contemporary figurative sculptor, best known for his large-scale public figure sculptures. His work emphasizes the relationship between human scale, real space, and the viewer’s experience, often using exaggerated proportions and segmented structures to allow viewers to “discover” the work within its environment. The Awakening Sculpture is one of his most representative works. This piece, by embedding the head, arms, and legs of a figure separately into the ground, presents the moment a “giant” awakens and struggles to emerge from the ground or water. The work pictured continues the signature segmented structure and dynamic composition of The Awakening Sculpture, but its overall proportions and volume have been redesigned to suit the needs of display at different scales.
From the outside, the figure’s palms are open upwards, fingers naturally curved, suggesting a moment of touching the outside world; the head is slightly tilted back, the facial expression tense yet restrained, reinforcing the emotional expression of “awakening in progress.” The legs and feet in the Awakening Sculpture rise from the flat surface, echoing the ripple-like texture on the base surface, creating the visual effect of the figure gradually emerging from the ground or water.
