The pine cone, with its layers of scales of varying sizes, forms a full and varied outline, providing a striking source of inspiration for large-scale landscape sculptures. This Pine Cone Statue was custom-made by Arturban to meet the client’s needs. Weathering steel was used to shape the pine cone scales, and 3D design, steel structure fabrication, hand welding, and rust-inducing coloring processes were combined to create a pine cone with distinct layers and a complete outline.

What Is a Pine Cone?

A pine cone is the cone-shaped structure of a pine tree, not a true fruit. It consists of a central axis and multiple layers of woody scales, and its main function is to protect the seed. Pine cones from different pine trees vary in size, shape, and scale detail, but all have a clear layered structure, which makes pine cones very suitable for sculptural purposes.
Why Do Pine Cones Open and Close?

Pine cones open and close according to changes in humidity. When the weather is dry, the scales usually open to facilitate seed dispersal by wind; when the air is humid or the cone encounters water, the scales gradually close. This process comes from the deformation of the internal tissues of the scales after absorbing and losing water, and is not an active movement of the pine cone.
What Does a Pine Cone Symbolize?

Pine cones often symbolize life, growth, renewal, and hope because they store new seeds that can germinate. Their layers of scales also give them a sense of protection and the accumulation of strength. As pine trees are evergreen, pine cones are also frequently associated with resilience, durability, and natural vitality.
From Nature to Art: A Large Pine Cone Statue Made in Our Factory

This large pine cone sculpture was custom-made for a landscape project client in the northwestern United States, planned for installation in an outdoor public space near a woodland. The client desired a sculpture that echoed the rich pine forest environment while possessing strong natural recognizability and outdoor weather resistance. Therefore, a real pine cone was chosen as inspiration, and the Pine Cone Statue was crafted from weathering steel.

The sculpture’s overall shape is a horizontally extending pine cone, broad and full at one end, gradually narrowing at the other, with a natural outline and a clear sense of direction. The surface of this Pine Cone Statue is constructed from numerous layers of weathering steel sheets of varying sizes, welded together to mimic the shape of pine cone scales, ranging from rounded, wide plates to slender scales near the tip. Each steel plate was individually cut, bent, and adjusted to maintain variation in angle, spacing, and degree of warping, preventing the shape from becoming too regular. The brownish-rust finish, similar in tone to real pine cones, bark, and soil, further enhances the sculpture’s natural texture.

How We Made This Metal Pine Cone Statue

We first complete a 3D design based on the client’s requirements, confirming the overall proportions, scale arrangement, size, and installation method of the pine cone.
After design confirmation, we fabricate the internal steel structure, then cut weathering steel sheets of different sizes and bend and shape them one by one.
Next, we weld them layer by layer according to the growth direction of the pine cone scales, adjusting the angle and spacing of each steel plate.
After assembly, we first grind the weld points and remove oil, dust, and oxide impurities, then evenly apply a rust-inducing agent to the surface of the weathering steel. After the surface of this Pine Cone Statue has undergone an initial reaction, we rinse it with clean water and allow it to air dry. Then, we spray a diluted treatment solution to allow the rust color to continue developing. For areas with lighter color or uneven reaction, workers will perform localized touch-ups and repeated adjustments until a more uniform brownish-red effect is achieved. Finally, we check the overall color difference, structural stability, and installation connections.
Why Was Corten Steel Chosen for the Pine Cone Garden Sculpture?

This pine cone sculpture is made of weathering steel because its naturally formed brown rust blends well with the mature pine cone, bark, and woodland environment. Weathering steel is suitable for outdoor use and is easy to cut, bend, and weld into scale-like structures of varying sizes. Over time, the surface color will gradually deepen, giving the sculpture a more natural and mellow texture.

In addition to weathering steel, Arturban also offers copper, fiberglass, marble, and stainless steel options to suit different project styles, budgets, and installation environments.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pine Cone Statues
1. What materials are available for pine cone statues?
Arturban offers materials such as weathering steel, copper, stainless steel, fiberglass, and marble, and recommends suitable solutions based on the installation environment, design style, and budget.
2. Can the size and shape be customized?
Yes. The length, height, overall proportions, placement orientation, and scale shape of the sculpture can all be adjusted according to project requirements.
3. Is a corten steel pine cone statue suitable for outdoor use?
Suitable. Weathering steel can be used in parks, gardens, and commercial landscapes, but the internal structure, drainage system, and installation foundation should be properly designed.
4. Will the corten steel surface change over time?
Yes. The surface of weathering steel will gradually oxidize, typically changing from orange-brown to a darker brownish-red. The specific change is affected by climate and environment.
5. How is a large pine cone statue installed?
Common methods include pre-embedded steel plates, anchor bolts, or concealed bases. The specific structure needs to be designed based on the sculpture’s size, weight, and site conditions.
6. Can the sculpture be divided into sections for shipping?
Yes. Large pine cone sculptures can be made in sections for easy container transport and on-site connection and installation.
7. Can you create a sculpture from our reference images?
Yes. Clients can provide images, sketches, dimensions, or 3D files. Arturban will first conduct design and structural planning before arranging production.
8. How long does production take?
Production time depends on size, material, complexity of the design, and quantity. The specific time will be determined after design and technical solutions are confirmed.
