1. Introduction of Madame Houdon Bust
Madame Houdon refers to Marie-Ange-Cécile Langlois, wife of the French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. Born in 18th-century France, she became a significant figure in the Houdon family in the 1780s. Houdon is renowned for his portrait sculptures, adept at capturing the true features and fleeting expressions of his subjects, and Madame Houdon’s portraits are particularly imbued with an intimate and natural quality. This Madame Houdon Bust reinterprets this classic female portrait in marble.
The figure is depicted in a half-length bust composition, with the head slightly turned to the side, the corners of the mouth naturally upturned, revealing a relaxed and subtle smile. The hair of the Madame Houdon Bust is combed back and styled into an updo, with layered curls on top and delicate braids cascading down the sides and back. The shoulders and chest are treated with a simple, truncated style.
