1. Introduction of Buddha Sarnath Statue

This sculpture is inspired by the “Buddha Preaching his First Sermon” in Sarnath, India, depicting the scene of Shakyamuni Buddha’s first sermon at Sarnath. The Buddha in the Buddha Sarnath Statue sits in the lotus position, his hands forming the Dharma wheel mudra at his chest, symbolizing the “turning of the Dharma wheel,” representing the opening and spread of Buddhist teachings. Sarnath is the place where the Buddha first preached the Dharma to his five disciples after his enlightenment; therefore, this type of Buddha statue is not merely a seated meditative image, but also emphasizes the significance of preaching, wisdom, and the transmission of Buddhism.

This Seated Buddha Sculpture is made of marble, with a dignified overall form. The Buddha’s face is serene, with slightly lowered eyes, spiral hair and a ushnisha (cranial protuberance), long earlobes, and a simple, upright body. The large circular halo behind him is carved with patterns, and above it on both sides are flying apsaras holding flower trays. The small relief figures below the base correspond to the five disciples listening to the Dharma, as well as a woman and a child, while the central Dharma wheel and the reclining deer on either side echo the “Deer Park” background of Sarnath.
