Igor Mitoraj (1944–2014) is a Polish-French sculptor known for his sculptures that combine classical aesthetics with contemporary language. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, then went to Paris and eventually settled in Italy. His creations are deeply influenced by ancient Greek and Roman art, and he is good at using marble and bronze to create broken but divine faces and body parts. Mitoraj’s works often revolve around memory, loss, mythology and the tension of human nature. This Mitoraj Eros Bendato sculpture, is one of Mitoraj’s most famous masterpieces.
The Igor Mitoraj Sculpture presents a huge bronze head with a bandage-like structure wrapped around its face and empty eyes, lying quietly on the ground. Its curly hair and classical face are obviously derived from the facial aesthetics of ancient Greek sculptures, but it is presented in a “broken” and “silent” way. The surface of the Mitoraj Eros Bendato sculpture uses a patina oxidation process, and the mottled texture strengthens the imprint of history and time.
