1. Introduction of Statue of Hercules Lansdowne Herakles
The “Hercules Lansdowne” is a Roman marble sculpture dating from approximately 125 AD, inspired by a lost Greek original from the fourth century BC. Unearthed in the 18th century from the ruins of the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s villa at Tivoli, the Statue of Hercules Lansdowne Herakles later came into the collection of the British nobleman Lord Lansdowne, who displayed it in his London residence, hence its name.
The sculpture depicts Hercules standing in a relaxed and natural pose, his left shoulder carrying a stout wooden club, his right hand dangling from the skin of a Nemean lion, a symbol of victory. His elegant proportions and soft yet powerful muscular lines convey both heroic strength and a quiet confidence. Compared to the Herakles Farnese Statue, this version appears more youthful and rational, lacking the sense of fatigue and weight, and instead conveying an air of balance and tranquility.
