The Ancient Statue of Hercules, “Hercules Delivering the Erymanthian Boar to Eurystheus” is a classic masterpiece by French Baroque artist François Lespingola. Based on one of the Twelve Labors of Heracles in Greek mythology, it depicts the hero, after completing the fourth of these labors, presenting a ferocious boar captured alive to King Eurystheus. The Statue of Herakles, with its dramatic poses and delicate details, creates a striking contrast between strength and fear, heroism and power.
Hercules, shirtless, with muscular tones, grasps the struggling boar. His expression is calm and resolute, conveying the hero’s will to overcome nature and fate. In contrast, Eurystheus, clad in armor and seated on a throne, recoils in fear, his hands raised in an attempt to stop Hercules from approaching. In the Statue of Herakles, the folds of the armor, the boar’s bristles and the muscle texture of the characters are all portrayed vividly and meticulously.
