1. Introduction of Philippe Laurent Roland Bust
Philippe-Laurent Roland (1746–1816) was a French Neoclassical sculptor, born in Pontamac, northern France, and later studied sculpture in Paris. He apprenticed under Augustin Pajou, and was influenced by both the French academic tradition and ancient Greek and Roman art, gradually developing a portrait style characterized by clear structure, rigorous proportions, and a focus on the true nature of the subject. This marble Philippe Laurent Roland Bust is a self-portrait Roland created around 1785, when he was nearly forty and in the prime of his artistic career.
The subject’s head is slightly turned to one side, his gaze direct and serene. His straight nose, tightly closed lips, and defined jaw convey a rational and meticulous temperament. His hair is combed back from the forehead, forming curls at the ears, retaining a characteristic 18th-century male hairstyle.
