1. Introduction of Olimpia Maidalchini Bust

Olimpia Maidalchini (1591–1657) was an influential noblewoman in 17th-century Rome, Italy, and the sister-in-law of Pope Innocent X. Born into a wealthy family in Viterbo, Italy, she later established ties with the Pamphili family through marriage. During her papacy, she participated in family affairs and exerted some influence on Roman political and religious life. This Olimpia Maidalchini Bust was created in the mid-17th century by the Italian Baroque sculptor Alessandro Algardi (1598–1654).

This Olimpia Maidalchini Bust is sculpted from white marble, depicting Olimpia’s head, shoulders, and chest. The figure has full cheeks, a broad forehead, a straight nose, naturally closed lips, a slightly raised head, and a serious and composed expression. The figure wears a large widow’s headscarf, the fabric spreading out from the center of the head to the sides, with layers of undulating folds carved inside. The figure is dressed in 17th-century European women’s clothing, with a multi-layered neckline, the fabric naturally gathering downwards at the chest, and small buttons adorning the sleeves. The facial skin is meticulously polished, while the headscarf and clothing utilize deep carved grooves to convey the heavy texture of the fabric.
