1. Introduction of Karl Theodor Bust
Karl Theodor (1724–1799) was an important 18th-century German ruler, a member of the Wittelsbach dynasty, who served as Elector Palatine and succeeded him as Elector of Bavaria in 1777. During his reign, he supported the development of art, science, and culture, significantly influencing the cultural development of Mannheim and Munich. This Karl Theodor Bust was created in 1789 by the Italian sculptor Giuseppe Ceracchi (1751–1801) and is now in the collection of the Bavarian State Museums in Germany.
This Karl Theodor Bust is sculpted from white marble, depicting the head, shoulders, and chest of Karl Theodor. The figure has a broad forehead, sparse hair on top, short hair on the sides, prominent brow bones, a straight nose, full cheeks, naturally closed lips, and a serious and composed expression. The shoulders are draped with a Roman-style cloak, the fabric spreading diagonally from one shoulder to the chest, creating layers of overlapping, curved folds. The bust rests on a simple, round, columnar base, making it suitable for display in historical figure galleries, art museums, and classically styled interior spaces.
