1. Introduction of Hercules and Nessus Statue
The Hercules and Nessus Sculpture, a marble sculpture completed in 1599 by Italian sculptor Giovanni da Bologna, is now on display in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria. Drawing on Greek mythology, the Hercules and Nessus Statue tells the story of the hero Hercules punishing the centaur Nessus, who attempted to abduct his wife, Dianira.
The sculpture depicts a moment of battle: Hercules holds his club aloft, his muscles tense, his face filled with anger and concentration; Nessus, his body twisted and his hooves straining, reveals an expression of pain and resistance. Bologna depicted the figures’ muscles and movements with exceptional anatomical precision, imbuing the hard marble with a sense of supple life. The overall composition, a serpentine spiral, creates a strong dynamic tension.
