Augustus, originally named Gaius Octavian, was born in 63 BC into a Roman noble family. His mother was Caesar’s niece, and although his family wasn’t among the highest nobility, their blood ties kept him closely connected to the political center from a young age. Octavian was known for his intelligence and composure from a young age, earning him Caesar’s favor. After Caesar’s assassination in 44 BC, Octavian was declared Caesar’s adopted son and sole heir, thus ascending to the pinnacle of power. This Bronze Statue of Augustus is based on the classic “Primapota Augustus” model and is crafted in bronze to convey a solemn quality.
In the Roman Statue of Augustus, Augustus’s right arm is outstretched, in a posture of speaking or commanding, showcasing his majesty as the leader of the empire. The breastplate is decorated with three-dimensional reliefs of deities, chariots, and symbols of victory, representing Roman power and sacred mission. He wears a cloak with clearly defined folds. At his feet, one can see Cupid riding a dolphin, a significant symbol emphasizing Augustus’s lineage as a descendant of Venus. The Bronze Statue of Augustus’s overall proportions are slender and idealized, presenting the classic style of “deified rulers” in Roman aesthetics.
