The cougar (Puma concolor), also known as the mountain lion, cougar, or jaguar cat, is one of the most widely distributed feline species, originating in the New World cat evolutionary lineage millions of years ago. Research suggests that animals of the genus Puma gradually formed during the Pleistocene epoch and spread widely across North and South America during the Ice Age, extending from southern Canada to Patagonia in South America.
