1. Introduction of Broken Head Statue
This sculpture is a fragment of a marble head from the Hellenistic period of ancient Greece (about the 2nd century BC). It was originally a giant statue of a young man, and now only the lower half of the face remains. The Broken Head Statue retains the structure of the lips, nose bridge, left ear and neck. The overall lines are smooth and the proportions are well-proportioned, showing typical Greek idealized human features. The lips are slightly open, the nose is straight, and the neck texture is naturally transitioned. Although the upper part of the face is missing, the remaining part still has strong vitality and artistic expression.
This work is currently collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States and is one of the important exhibits in the museum’s Greek and Roman art exhibition area. Its broken state does not weaken the expressiveness of the work, but highlights the charm of “incomplete beauty”. The surface of the sculpture retains some finely polished texture, reflecting the warm marble luster.
