1. Introduction of Aphrodite Relief

This relief, the famous Ludovisi Throne, is a masterpiece of marble sculpture from the Early Classical period of ancient Greece (circa 460 BC), now housed in the National Museum of Rome. The work consists of three relief panels. The central panel of the Aphrodite Relief depicts the theme of “Aphrodite Anadyomene”: the goddess rises from the water, flanked by attendants who assist in supporting and covering her with cloth, creating a scene imbued with a strong sense of ritual and sacredness. The left and right panels each present different female figures: one woman plays the aulos (double-pipe flute), while the other depicts a woman dressed elegantly, performing a religious ceremony (possibly burning incense).

The figures in the Aphrodite Relief are symmetrically and stably posed, with a more frontal posture, while also incorporating natural body transitions and soft curves. The drapery is carved in an early “wet cloak style,” with thin, clinging garments that both outline the human form and retain the rhythm and cadence of the fabric. The marble surface possesses a warm and rustic texture, enhancing the sense of historical weight.
