1. Introduction of Alcibiades Sculpture
Alcibiades (c. 450–404 BC) was a highly controversial statesman and military figure in classical Athens, active during the Peloponnesian War. Born into an aristocratic family, he was closely associated with Socrates in his youth and was influenced by his ideas. Alcibiades is known for his exceptional military talent, strong political ambition, and frequent shifts in allegiances: he served Athens, later defected to Sparta, made contact with Persian forces, and ultimately returned to the Athenian camp. This Alcibiades Sculpture is sculpted from white marble, referencing classical portraiture.
The figure is depicted as a young male, head slightly raised and turned to one side. The facial features are smooth, with a straight nose, closed lips, and a rounded jawline. The most distinctive feature of the Alcibiades Sculpture is his short, curly hair, which extends continuously from the forehead to the sides and back of the head. The neck and shoulders connect downwards to a broad, rectangular base, on the front of which is inscribed with the Greek inscription “ΑΛΚΙΒΙΑΔΗΣ ΚΛΕΙΝΙΟΥ ΑΘΗΝΑΙΟΣ”, indicating Alcibiades’ name, paternal lineage, and Athenian identity.
