1. Introduction of Girl of Cairo Bust
Émile-Coriolan-Hippolyte Guillemin (1841–1907) was a 19th-century French sculptor and one of the most representative figures of French Orientalist sculpture. Active in the Parisian art scene, his works primarily focused on historical figures, exotic subjects, and North African and Middle Eastern themes. He was particularly adept at using headdresses, clothing, weapons, beads, and multicolored patina to express the figures’ identities. This Girl of Cairo Bust, titled Jeune fille du Caire, is one of Guillemin’s representative Orientalist busts.
The work depicts a young woman gazing in profile. She wears a beaded turban topped with a small cap, exhibiting characteristics of Cairo women’s clothing common in 19th-century Orientalist art. Pendants and necklaces adorn her ears and neck. The clothing on her chest is layered, featuring buttons, fabric folds, and decorative patterns.
