1. Introduction of Angel of the Waters Fountain
Angel of the Waters is an iconic sculpture in Bethesda Fountain in Central Park, New York City. Created by American sculptor Emma Stebbins, it was officially completed in 1873. She was the first female artist to be commissioned for a large-scale public sculpture in New York, thus giving the work a significant place in the history of American public art. The name of the Angel of the Waters Fountain comes from the story of Bethesda Fountain in the Gospel of John, where legend says an angel descended upon the water and bestowed healing powers upon it.
The Garden Angel Fountain depicts a female angel with outstretched wings, dressed in a classically styled robe, her posture elegant and dignified. One arm is outstretched, while the other holds a lily, symbolizing purity, hope, and blessing. Cast in bronze, the Angel of the Waters Fountain delicately depicts the texture of the unfolding wings and the naturally flowing lines of the robe.
