The Qilin is one of the auspicious beasts in ancient Chinese mythology, regarded as a “benevolent beast” symbolizing good fortune, peace, and high virtue. Its image is not a single animal, but rather a combination of features from deer, oxen, and horses, often described in traditional texts as having “the body of a deer, the tail of an ox, the hooves of a horse, and covered in scales.” In ancient times, the Qilin was believed to appear only during times of peace and prosperity or the descent of a sage, thus carrying strong auspicious connotations.
