1. Introduction of Emperor Claudius Statue
Claudius was the fourth emperor of the Roman Empire, reigning from 41 to 54 AD, and was born into the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Before his accession, he was largely excluded from the core of power, but after ascending the throne, he demonstrated strong administrative abilities. He emphasized legal systems and provincial administration, expanded the bureaucracy, and launched a military campaign against Britain in 43 AD, giving the Roman Empire formal control over southern Britain. This Emperor Claudius Statue is a full-length standing statue, depicting Claudius in the official form as the Roman god Jupiter.
The figure wears a laurel wreath, is bare-chested, and draped in a heavy robe with folds that cascade naturally from the shoulders and waist, creating a clear sense of depth from the back. The proportions are precise, with well-defined but not exaggerated muscles. The left arm is raised, and the right arm is extended forward, holding a shallow dish (patera). An eagle is carved at the figure’s feet, a clearly symbolic animal in the image of Jupiter.
