1. Introduction of Epicurus Sculpture
Epicurus (c. 341–270 BC) was a prominent ancient Greek philosopher and the founder of the Epicurean school. His philosophy centered on the pursuit of happiness, but not sensual indulgence. Instead, it emphasized achieving inner peace through rational restraint and the elimination of fear. He believed suffering stemmed from misunderstandings of death, divine will, and desire, thus advocating for a simple life, friendship, and spiritual stability. This Epicurus Sculpture is in the classical bust style, depicting a male head, neck, and upper chest fragment: short, curly hair undulating in layers; clearly defined brow ridges and nose bridge; a mustache connected to a thick, curly beard, with tufts hanging down, the incised lines indicating the direction of the curls.
The neck and chest taper abruptly, retaining a rough, “cross-sectional” texture at the edges; shallow relief lines depicting drapery folds are visible in some areas. The overall design features a marble texture and a light beige tone, with subtle color variations and antique aging marks visible on the surface. The Epicurus Sculpture uses metal supports to connect to a square base, making it easy to place stably on a tabletop, display case, or indoor display.
