1. Introduction of Hercules Torso Statue
The Torso of Hercules Statue is a sculpture depicting the ancient Greek hero Heracles. The extant portion consists of the torso from the chest to the thigh. Cast in bronze, the Hercules Torso Statue has a deep, dark, glossy finish and a rich, heavy texture. Hercules’s powerful pectoral muscles, defined abdominal muscles, and taut shoulders and back embody the classical pursuit of strength and perfect proportion.
This sculpture is a 2nd-century Roman re-creation or reproduction of the Greek original, the Farnese Hercules. The original, by the Athenian sculptor Glykon of Athens, depicts Hercules resting after completing the Twelve Labors. This torso, however, focuses on the core of the figure, preserving the pose of the torso and head.
The surface of the statue bears the marks of age and the mottled patina of bronze oxidation.
